Adolescent Cognitive Training Study

Online | Ages 12-17

Help Advance Research on Cognitive Training

Our ability to pay attention, remember information, and solve problems develops throughout adolescence. Researchers at Northeastern University are studying how cognitive training may influence attention, memory, and other aspects of cognition.

By participating, you and your child can help researchers better understand how cognitive training works and how different approaches may affect cognitive performance.

About the Study

This is an online research study about understanding and training human cognition. The study involves completing computerized tasks designed to measure attention and memory, as well as questionnaires about your child’s experiences, feelings, personality, and habits.

Participants will be randomly assigned to a cognitive training condition and will complete 40 training sessions. The study also includes assessments before and after training, as well as a follow-up assessment approximately six months after training is complete.

Training sessions are completed remotely using a tablet provided by the research team. Some training sessions will take place over Zoom with members of the research team, while most sessions will be completed independently.

Eligibility

Your child may be eligible if they…

  • Are 12-17 years old
  • vAre fluent in English
  • Have an adult parent or legal guardian who is able to participate in the consent process and complete questionnaires
  • Currently live in the US

What to Expect

If your child is eligible and chooses to participate, they will first complete a pre-test session involving cognitive assessments on a tablet over a video call. You and your child will also complete questionnaires about your child’s mental health and experiences.

During the study, your child will complete:

  • Computerized tasks that measure attention and memory
  • Tasks involving visual and auditory information
  • Puzzles and other problem-solving activities
  • Questionnaires about their experiences and feelings
  • Cognitive training activities using a tablet

Parents will also complete questionnaires about their child’s emotions, thoughts, behaviors, personality, and habits.

Some training sessions will be completed over Zoom with members of the research team. Your child may also receive weekly video-conference coaching sessions to discuss their training progress, set goals, and answer questions. Parents are welcome to join these coaching sessions.

Assignment to a training condition is random, and participants cannot choose which condition they are assigned to.

Study Timeline

The study takes place over several months and includes:

  • 2 pre-test sessions, completed over approximately 2 days, with sessions lasting about 1 hour each
  • 40 training sessions, approximately 20 minutes each
  • Brief questionnaires after each training session, taking approximately 5–10 additional minutes
  • Possible weekly coaching sessions lasting approximately 1 hour
  • A post-test after training, completed over approximately 2 days
  • A 6-month follow-up assessment, completed over approximately 2 days

Most training sessions will be completed independently, with several sessions taking place over Zoom with members of the research team.

Compensation

Participants and their guardian will be jointly compensated at a rate of $10 per hour of scheduled participation.

Compensation is provided after completion of the post-test and again after the 6-month follow-up. If you end your participation before the study is complete, compensation will be prorated for the time completed.
